After all the excitement and busy-ness of the holidays (beginning with Halloween) do y’all welcome the quiet of January? Do you pack your holiday trappings away at a leisurely pace? Do you take the entire month to recharge? refresh? To dilly dally? To lollygag about? To hibernate!
At the Sidewalk House, we take January very seriously as a time for kicking back. So much so that there would probably be a few boxes or bins still cluttering our space if it weren’t for February and its many events. How is it that the shortest month of the year contains so many celebrations?
- National Heart Month ~ February 5 is National Wear Red Day
- Groundhog Day ~ that’s a story for another day
- Chinese New Year ~ I have the need, the need for . . . flavors of the Orient
- Mardi Gras ~ around here most celebrated as Paczki Day, but at our house we are Louisiana at heart
- Superbowl 50 ~ just because
- Valentines Day ~ for sure
- President’s Day ~ now and again
- Iowa caucuses? ~ just kidding
I am sure there are other events to consider but for me, this is a gracious plenty. February first is our deadline to have the 2015 holidays packed away. Out come Chinese lanterns and dragons ~ Mardi Gras masks and beads ~ Hearts and cupids ~ and team colors. Not sure what we are going to do about team colors as none of our teams (Chicago Bears? nope! Seattle Seahawks? we were cheering! Detroit Lions? it’s been a while. New Orleans Saints? sorry, Robin) are playing. But! It’s the 30th anniversary of the Chicago Bear’s last Super Bowl win and there are celebrations all over town. Problem solved ~ Navy and Orange it is!
In February, our menus will be ramped up. January’s comfort foods will be but a memory. Captain Romance has begun putting in requests for his favorite February dishes. Ants Climbing a Tree, Bao, Szechuan Red Noodles with Beef for the Year of the Monkey; Crawfish Etouffe for Mardi Gras ~ he insists ~ and perhaps a King Cake?; Kumomoto Oysters, steamed with a spicy butter sauce or Carpetbaggers for Valentines Day. And I cannot tell a lie ~ a cherry pie (the man’s all time favorite) for President’s Day ~ this past year our tree yielded enough cherries to tuck away a pie’s worth in the back of the freezer.
And between all these special events ~ or because of all these special events, there will be, there must be menus that are heart healthy! But that’s a given in any month, don’t you think?!
Do tell, sweet family and friends, how will you celebrate February? Parties? Decorations? Food? Travel? Or will you continue to hibernate? Please share! And do check back now and again as we post snippets of February at the Sidewalk House ~ Thank Goodness It’s February!
As always, HUGS, Jackie and Ken
